About Ashton-under-Lyne

Ashton-under-Lyne is a town in Greater Manchester, England. The population of the Ashton-under-Lyne ward at the 2011 census was 45,198. Ashton-under-Lyne is located approximately 8 miles (13 km) east of Manchester city center and is one of 10 metropolitan boroughs that make up Greater Manchester. Ashton-under-Lyne forms part of the Ashton Canal, which gave the town its name from Ashton-upon-Mersey, and the River Tame. The manufacture of textiles was Ashton’s chief industry during the Industrial Revolution. Ashton was noted for its production of cotton appliances and subsequently became known as the “Capital of Cotton”.

When the Ashton Canal closed in the 1930s, Ashton’s textile industry suffered. The town’s last mill closed in 1969. Ashton-under-Lyne was Ashton until 1824 when it became Ashton-under-Lyne.

The Ashton family had been lords of the manor since the 14th century and owned much of the land on which Ashton was built. Ashton Old Hall was the family home and seat of the Ashton family for many generations until it was destroyed by fire in 1754. Ashton-under-Lyne during the Industrial Revolution was Ashton-upon-Mersey, centered around the River Mersey to the south of Ashton. The Ashton Canal bisected Ashton-under-Lyne and Ashton-upon-Mersey.

Ashton’s growth during the late 19th century and early 20th century was caused by Ashton’s role as a cotton mill town and its proximity to Manchester, leading to Ashton becoming a commuter town for Manchester workers. The Ashton main colliery disaster in 1866 killed 270 miners. Ashton-under-Lyne was also the scene of rioting in 1887 and 1930.
