Horndean is a town in the English county of Hampshire. Horndean is situated in the southeast of England, approximately 10 miles (16 km) northwest of Portsmouth. Horndean is within the city of Portsmouth’s unitary authority area. Horndean Parish Council is responsible for some local amenities including Allotments and plays areas. Horndean is part of Meon Valley parliamentary constituency, which is currently represented in the UK Parliament by George Hollingbery MP. Horndean forms part of the South Downs National Park.
The name ‘Horndean’ is derived from the Old English for ‘valley with a horn-shaped outcrop of chalk’.
The first known settlement in Horndean was a small roman farmstead, which was situated near to the present-day village of Blendworth. Horndean was mentioned in the Domesday Book as ‘Hornedon’.
The parish church of St Peter and St Paul dates from the 13th century and is a grade I listed building. Horndean is also home to a number of other grade II listed buildings, including Horndean Place, Horndean House, and Horndean Mill.
The nearest railway station to Horndean is Liss, which is approximately 4 miles (6 km) away. The nearest airport is Southampton Airport, which is located approximately 20 miles (32 km) away.
