About Houghton-Le-Spring
Houghton-Le-Spring is a town in Tyne and Wear, North East England. The town has a population of 36,141 and is located about 10 miles (16 km) north of Sunderland, 15 miles (24 km) south-west of Newcastle upon Tyne and 12 miles (19 km) east of Durham.
Houghton-Le-Spring is situated to the north of the Wear, a few miles inland from Sunderland and the coast. Houghton’s name is derived from the Old English for ‘settlement on or near a hill’. The ‘spring’ element refers to a local stream, the Houghton Burn, which runs through the town before joining the Wear. The town is informally split into Houghton proper and West Houghton, separated by a small valley.
The earliest records of Houghton date back to the 12th century, when it was referred to as Hohtune. It was granted its first charter by Humphrey de Bohun in 1220, making it a ‘free borough’, and its first mayor was appointed in 1253. Houghton grew rapidly during the Industrial Revolution, and by the end of the 19th century it was one of the largest colliery towns in the world, with 37 pits. It continued to be a major mining town until the middle of the 20th century, when the last pit closed. Houghton was designated a New Town in 1967, and its population has since increased to 36,141.
