Middleton is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale, in Greater Manchester, England. It lies on the River Irk, 5 miles (8 km) south-southwest of Rochdale and 8 miles (13 km) northeast of Manchester city center. Historically part of Lancashire, Middleton was absorbed into the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale in 1974.
Middleton had a population of 43,583 in 2011.
The town’s middle-class origins date back to the Industrial Revolution when many wealthy mill owners moved from the center of Manchester to what was then a rural village. The town has since become a largely working-class area with a high proportion of residents from an Asian or Afro-Caribbean background.
Middleton is served by two railway stations, Middleton Junction and Mills Hill, both on the Manchester–Bolton line. There are also three tram stops on the Metrolink Middleton line: Town Centre, Bowlee, and Mills Hill. The M60 motorway passes through the town’s western and northern fringes.
Middleton was originally a village in the parish of Prestwich-cum-Oldham. It is recorded as Middleton-in-Prestwich in 1292, and Oldham cum Middleton in 1577. The name derives from the Old English word Middleton, meaning middle farmstead or village; it was an outlying community of Prestwich until the Industrial Revolution. By 1755 there were only six scattered farms in Middleton township.
The arrival of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway in 1842 led to a rapid increase in population and industries such as coal mining, cotton spinning, and hat-making became established in the town.
Middleton Junction railway station was opened in 1842, as part of the LYR’s line from Manchester to Leeds. Middleton Town Hall was completed in 1876 and additions were made to the tramway system in 1899.
