About Salisbury

Salisbury is a city in Wiltshire, England. Salisbury Cathedral, founded in 1220, has the tallest church spire in the United Kingdom. The city has a medieval centre surrounded by a green belt of parks and gardens. Salisbury railway station is a regional interchange.

Salisbury is near the edge of Salisbury Plain, an area of chalk downland. Salisbury was the site of the original UK manufacture of Britain’s first hovercraft, the SR.N1. Indications of human occupation date back to the Bronze Age, and by the Iron Age the area had developed into a hillfort. Salisbury became a market town during the Saxon period, with the establishment of Salisbury Market Place. The market was notable for its size and wealth, attracting shoppers from as far away as London.

The medieval period saw the construction of Salisbury Cathedral, one of the tallest in the country, and Salisbury Castle. Salisbury Cathedral is notable for its 123m spire, the tallest in the United Kingdom, and for its outstanding copied of the Magna Carta. Salisbury Castle is notable for its 12th-century keep.

In the early modern period Salisbury was an important stop on the London to Exeter stagecoach route, and a staging post on the Bath to London road. Salisbury was also a significant wool-trading centre, and in the 18th century became a major coaching town. The Salisbury Assembly Rooms, built in 1791, are notable for their Georgian architecture.

The city was home to the Salisbury Journal, the oldest newspaper in Britain, which was first published in 1692. The paper continued publication until 2017. Salisbury Racecourse, founded in 1792, is the oldest racecourse in Britain.

Salisbury was granted city status in 1226. Salisbury City Council is a unitary authority, responsible for all local government services. The Salisbury City Museum is located in the King’s House on Market Place. The museum tells the story of Salisbury and its people from prehistoric times to the present day. Salisbury Cathedral is a significant tourist attraction, drawing visitors from all over the world. The city has a number of other tourist attractions, including Salisbury Zoo, Salisbury Arts Centre, Salisbury Museum, Salisbury Palace, and Old Sarum Castle. Salisbury is also home to a number of annual festivals and events, including the Salisbury International Arts Festival, Salisbury Folk Festival, Salisbury Food Festival, Salisbury Medieval Pageant, and Salisbury Christmas Market.
