Wallsend is a town in North Tyneside, Tyne and Wear, North East England. Historically part of Northumberland, Wallsend derives its name as the easternmost settlement of the Wallsend Burn. An urban settlement located on the River Tyne, Wallsend has a history dating back to Roman Britain. It was an early industrial hub and was once a centre of shipbuilding. Wallsend’s industries included coal mining, glass making, and tanning. As of 2010, Wallsend has a population of 42,842. Wallsend is mentioned in the Hadrian’s Wall poem by Bernard Gilpin: “And long Wallsend runneth roun’ / To Newcastell that lie by Tine.”
Wallsend was first recorded in the Complete Peerage for England, Scotland, Ireland and Great Britain as a manor held by the monks of Tynemouth Priory. In 1249 Wallsend was granted a charter by King Henry III, forming part of the town’s royal heritage. Wallsend became a town in 1835 and Wallsend Town Council was formed in 1894. Wallsend’s population increased rapidly during the 19th century due to the growth of industry, reaching 40,000 by 1901. As of 2010, Wallsend has a population of 42,842.
