About Barrow-In-Furness

Barrow-in-Furness is a town in Cumbria, England. Historically part of Lancashire, it was incorporated as a municipal borough in 1867 and merged with adjacent districts in 1974 to form the Borough of Barrow-in-Furness. At the 2011 census, Barrow had a population of 62,463, making it the second-largest settlement in Cumbria.

Named after Barrow Island, which lies just to the south of the town center, Barrow is a hub for offshore wind power and manufacturing. The Duddon Estuary lies to the west, while the Furness Fells are to the north. The town is twinned with Fredericia in Denmark and Stavanger in Norway.

Barrow-in-Furness was established as a market town and port on the Furness peninsula by the Vikings in the 10th century. It was Barrai in 1266, and Barrowforde (or Barroweford) in 1537. The town’s name was recorded as Barrow in 1567. The name Furness is derived from the Old English fyrnes, meaning “thorny place”.

The island of Barrai was situated off the western coast of Cumbria and is now largely reclaimed land within Barrow’s docks complex. By the late 12th century the Barrow area had been settled by Danes and Norwegians, but Barrow’s history really began in 1266 when King Henry III granted the Barony of Furness to Sir Peter de Brus. In return he undertook to build a castle in Barrow for the king.

De Brus arrived in Barrow with a force of men in the summer of 1267 and began construction of a castle. The castle, which was completed in 1270, was located on Barrow Island, an area of reclaimed land surrounded by marshy fenland. It was constructed from stone brought from quarries at Kirkby-in-Furness and Dalton-in-Furness and had a square keep with four corner towers.

The Barony of Furness was created by the Royal Charter in 1266, and Barrow became the seat of the Barony. The Barony comprised the whole of the modern Borough of Barrow-in-Furness, plus Dalton-in-Furness to the south, and included the Furness peninsula and the surrounding islands.

Sir Peter de Brus, 1st Lord of Annandale and Hartness, died in 1295 and was succeeded by his son Robert. In 1301 Robert Bruce, Earl of Carrick, acceded to the throne of Scotland as Robert I, and Barrow came under Scottish rule.

In 1307, Robert I granted Barrow and the Barony of Furness to his son-in-law, Walter de Huntercombe, but it was retaken by the Scots in 1316 after the Battle of Bannockburn. Barrow was recaptured by the English in 1318 and regained its status as the seat of the Barony of Furness.
