About Basildon

Basildon is located within the county of Essex in East England. The town is only 26 miles from Central London as is in close proximity to locations such as Chelmsford which is 11 miles south of Basildon and Southend-On-Sea which is 10 miles west of the town.

The New Towns Act of 1947 designated Basildon as a “New Town”. In 1949, the Government officially declared the area a ‘New Town’. A government-appointed Basildon Development Corporation formed to transform the designated area into modern town. Laindon and Pitsea, Vange and Lee Chapel, as well as parts of Dunton Hills, Langdon Hills, and Nevendon, were all incorporated into the new development. Basildon was a small rural community with only 1,159 people in 1931.

Basildon was created as a ‘overspill town’ to relieve overpopulated east London areas but also to provide modern housing and essential services to the population of 22,000 people, many of whom were living in homes that did not meet the Housing Act standards.

In 1951, the first tenants in Redgrave Road Vange moved into newly constructed homes.

The development continued through the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s until the closure of the Development Corporation.
The town continues to change with new additions like the Festival Leisure Park, The Icon Apartment Block and the new Sporting Village that boasts the only swimming pool of 50 metres in Essex.
Basildon, which has celebrated its 70th anniversary, looks forward to a bright future.

Rail Services

The direct London (Fenchurch Street to Shoeburyness) rail route bisects the town, with stations at Laindon Basildon and Pitsea. Pitsea is also a junction for Tilbury Grays. C2C operates the services.

Bus Services

There are several bus operators that serve the Basildon district. There are a number of bus operators in the Basildon district, including Arriva, First and Clintona. Nelson’s Independent Bus Services, Wickford, is also included.

Trunk Roads

The A127 borders the town at its northernmost extremity, while the A13 skirts around the Vange housing development in the south. Both roads link the town to Southend-on-Sea and the London orbital M25. Arterial Road, also known as the A127, continues past the M25 junction and into London Borough Havering. It becomes the A12 after the Gallows Corner flyover. The A13 in east London is the best route to the Thurrock Lakeside Shopping Complex.

The Earliest Reference

Basildon first appeared in 1086 in the Domesday Survey as Berlesduna, and was located in the Barstable Hundred. For centuries it was a small village. The small population of Basildon was mostly concentrated around Church Road near Holy Cross Church. Over the years, Basildon has been spelled as Batlesdon and Basseldon. The name Basildon comes from Saxon meaning Beorhtel’s Hill. It is approximately 7.818 acres in size. The highest point, Langdon Hills is also the second highest in Essex with 384 feet above sea level (117.0432 meters). And the lowest point, Bowers Gifford Marshes at 5 feet (1.52400 meters), is located at Bowers Gifford.

There are many high-street stores in the town centre. The covered <a href=”” title=”Eastgate Shopping Centre (Basildon)”>Eastgate Shopping Centre</a> is home to more than 100 retailers. It is located in the East Walk and Town Square open-air areas.

Eastgate, when completed in 1985 was the largest covered mall in Europe. This was until the MetroCentre shopping centre opened. Eastgate has seen a number of facelifts, the most recent being a substantial refurbishment of its interior in 2007, at a cost exceeding PS10m.

Westgate Shopping Park offers more shopping options in the town. A pavement market sells fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as housewares. This market moved in 2018 to St. Martins Square.

Pipps Hills and Mayflower, located on the A127 outside the town centre, are both retail parks. Laindon, home to the famous Pitsea market, has smaller shopping centres. Each community has a number of smaller shopping centres.
