About Herne Bay
Herne Bay is a seaside town in Kent, England. It is 8 miles (13 km) north of Canterbury and lies on the south coast of the Thames Estuary. Herne Bay’s seafront is home to two piers, the Herne Bay Pier and the Tankerton Jetty.
The town center is inland and has a mix of independent shops and national retailers. There are Herne Bay Infant School, Herne Bay Junior School, Herne Bay High School, and Kingsmead School.
The town is also home to two further education colleges, Canterbury Christ Church University and the University for the Creative Arts. Herne Bay’s status as a seaside resort was established in Victorian times. The coming of the Herne Bay and Whitstable Railway in 1846 made it much easier for visitors to reach the town and Herne Bay rapidly developed as a holiday destination, with a number of large hotels being built.
By the early 20th century, Herne Bay had become one of the most popular seaside resorts in the country, with a promenade, pier, bandstand, pavilion and large numbers of hotels, boarding houses, and other accommodation.
